Fortunately, controlling them is very intuitive and more than half the fun of the game. The game doesn't just a new controllable character to the play, it also adds a few new shades of pikmin, the diminutive creatures that carry out Olimar's bidding.
The game's collection of pikmin are color-coded with each shade having it's own special abilities. The new poisonous white pikmin are themselves resistant to poison and can find treasure while the new purple pikmin are ten times stronger than their counter-parts.
The game also has new cave areas to explore and an unlimited time period for spelunking. The original game had a 30 day time limit. The change that most makes this game a keeper is the addition of several new modes.
There's a two-player battle mode, split-screen mode and a two-player challenge mode. Pikmin 2 is the type of strange, oddly addictive game that keeps Nintendo fans happy and draws new followers to the brand daily. The game blends the best aspects of puzzle games with a twist of action and adventure, leaving gamers with a constant desire to play and control. Two thimble-tall alien astronauts are better than one, or so goes the theory behind this sequel.
Aside from two-player play, it tosses in new photosynthesis-fueled critters--a burly purple fella and a creepy, poisonous white one. Pikmin 2 centers on quests for doodads, which isn't much different from the goal of the first game. The players can take their time and explore the Pikmin planet's lovely areas.
Dungeons were also added for the players to explore, with each floor randomly altered. Also an encyclopedia was added which is filled with funny bios of every creature that you meet, and every treasure that you find, giving the game a bit of a nature show feel.
And with over unique pieces of treasure and multiplayer and mission modes, the game is packed to the brim. Olimar and Louie send the Pikmin cute innocent wonderful creatures to dangerous areas and certain death situations to find treasure and to pay their company's debt.
The amazing thing is that the game is adorable and just wonderful from start to finish. I loved every second. Pikmin are in a nutshell, like ants. They gain strength in numbers. The more Olimar gets under his command the more efficient they become. There are 3 types of Pikmin: red immune to fire , yellow immune to electricity , and blue immune to water. Olimar needs to command the Pikmin as they defeat enemies, rebuild bridges, tear down walls, and carry items back to his ship.
The player has 30 days roughly 20 minutes each to rebuild Olimar's ship and get him back to planet Hoctate. After coming to, Olimar discovered himself on a strange planet he couldn't recognize, but at least he was alive.
Unfortunately, his ship had seen better days as it apparently broke apart upon entry into the atmosphere and scattered across the planet. To make matters worse, after testing the air for poisons, he discovered it contained oxygen, which is deadly to his kind. With only thirty days worth of breathable air in his space suit, time is of the essence as he'll have to recover all the pieces to his ship before his air supply runs out. Pikmin is one of the latest original creations to be released by Nintendo and as expected, it's as fun as it is difficult to classify.
Although definitely geared toward a younger audience, it has a much larger appeal with enough intrigue and difficulty to appease most gamers. If you purchased a Gamecube, chances are it's the potential for games like Pikmin that made the decision to buy easier and so far, it looks like money well spent. As you'll see, there are some issues that could have been improved but generally its unique gameplay will offset those problems.
Pikmin gameplay is designed around not surprisingly, the Pikmin. To understand how to use them, first some explanation about them is required. Pikmin appear to be a cross between plant and animal life forms. They for instance, start out as seeds and sprout up when they're ready to be picked.

He soon meets a friendly species who he decides to call 'Pikmin' who under Olimar's command can help him retrieve his lost ship part and get back home.
