Files that you exclude using the methods described in this article can still trigger EDR alerts and other detections. To exclude files broadly, add them to the Microsoft Defender for Endpoint custom indicators. See Recommendations for defining exclusions before defining your exclusion lists. To exclude certain files from Microsoft Defender Antivirus scans, you modify your exclusion lists. Microsoft Defender Antivirus includes many automatic exclusions based on known operating system behaviors and typical management files, such as those used in enterprise management, database management, and other enterprise scenarios and situations.
Automatic exclusions apply only to Windows Server and later. These exclusions are not visible in the Windows Security app and in PowerShell. The Group Policy lists take precedence when there are conflicts. In addition, exclusion list changes made with Group Policy are visible in the Windows Security app. To allow local changes to override managed deployment settings, configure how locally and globally defined exclusions lists are merged.
